Back from a week full of inspiration in Bologna… a Back from a week full of inspiration in Bologna… and straight back to my favorite place 💛

My colorful little studio, where all those ideas are now patiently waiting (or loudly demanding) to be turned into something ✨

Honestly, as much as I love the buzz of a book fair, there’s nothing like being back at my own desk, surrounded by my own chaos.
Ciao Bologna! ✨ My first time at the @bolognachild Ciao Bologna! ✨
My first time at the @bolognachildrensbookfair and what an incredible experience it was. So much inspiration (and a new personal record on my step counter 😄).

I went together with my lovely friend @suzanna_knight , which made it all even more special. It was amazing to see my Dutch publisher @voltkinderboeken in action, working so hard to bring the books we made together to readers in other languages.

I also finally met my English publisher @postwave_books in real life, and got to meet my book ‘This Is What a Slug Does’ for the very first time. Love at first sight 🥹

The city was buzzing with amazing events: from the book launch of I Will Eat You in the End by @dufffiction and @mariannacoppo , to a mini festival around @inuitbookshop , and beautiful exhibitions by @k0.za and @lindstrom1237 .
And of course… ate a lot of gelato and fresh pasta🍦

Grazie mille, Bologna, see you next year! 💛

Soft colors, tiny treasures, stories waiting to happen… and somewhere in between, my drawings quietly joining the scene.

On this wall: a starry sky I created with @mrstarskyamsterdam , a tiny universe captured in one moment, where constellations wander and quietly remind us there’s just as much magic down here as up above.

Basically: a room where both dreams and bedtime negotiations happen. My work feels right at home at @sswerink .🩷

New materials are always exciting, but these ones New materials are always exciting, but these ones from @splendith recently turned out to be especially useful for a children’s book I’m currently working on. One thing I can already share: there are quite a few plants in the book. So lately I’ve been spending a lot of time drawing leaves, stems and all the little shapes and textures that make them come alive. I’d already shared the new materials before, but now they’ve properly found their place in the process. 💚

For these illustrations I used:
• Pan Pastel for the base, a soft underlayer
• Roman Szmal watercolours for the leaves and their texture
• Gouache from Daniel Smith, Holbein and Royal Talens for depth in different kinds of leaves
• Caran d’Ache LUMINANCE 6901 pencils for the final details

For me, choosing the right materials is an essential part of making a children’s book illustration truly connect. Each material brings its own texture, character and small surprises. When you work by hand, those layers and marks become part of the image itself. I believe children can feel that.
What do you think helps an illustration truly connect with a child?

Maybe one of them has already found a spot on your Maybe one of them has already found a spot on your wall…✨

An owl mid-flight, a skating lion, or a rock & roll-loving bear keeping you company.
They’ve slowly been making their way into new homes, which feels a little surreal (in the best way).💛

If you’ve got one hanging somewhere, I’d love to see where they ended up.
